Light propagation in square law media with random imperfections

چکیده

This paper investigates the deformation of the eld transmitted through a square law medium waveguide. We consider the situation where the center of the waveguide randomly oscillates around the optical axis or the radius of the waveguide randomly pulsates. The random perturbations are small, but the waveguide is long, which gives rise to a macroscopic eeect of the inhomogeneities. This eeect is characterized by coupling mechanisms between optical modes, which tend to strengthen high order modes. Precise expressions for the transmitted wave are derived which exhibit remarkable regimes, where behaviors such as shift, spreading or even focusing of the eld can be observed. Numerical simulations are in good agreement with the theoretical results.

Fractional Precursors in Random Media

When a broadband pulse penetrates into a dissipative and dispersive medium, phase dispersion and frequency-dependent attenuation alter the pulse in a way that results in the appearance of a precursor field with an algebraic decay. We derive here the existence of precursors in nondispersive, non-dissipative, but randomly heterogeneous and multiscale media. The shape of the precursor and its frac...

Quantitative Comparison of Analytical solution and Finite Element Method for investigation of Near-Infrared Light Propagation in Brain Tissue Model

Introduction: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an imaging method in which light source and detector are installed on the head; consequently, re-emission of light from human skin contains information about cerebral hemodynamic alteration. The spatial probability distribution profile of photons penetrating tissue at a source spot, scattering into the tissue, and being released at ...

Exceptional reduction of the diffusion constant in partially disordered photonic crystals.

In real photonic crystals light is scattered by the imperfections of the periodic potential. We study experimentally the propagation of diffused light in silicon inverse opals and report an exceptionally reduced diffusion constant of 3.0+/-0.7 m(2)/s, in samples which are only partially disordered. Waves scattered both by the lattice planes and by their imperfections interfere and light is effi...

Lower bound for the spatial extent of localized modes in photonic-crystal waveguides with small random imperfections

Light localization due to random imperfections in periodic media is paramount in photonics research. The group index is known to be a key parameter for localization near photonic band edges, since small group velocities reinforce light interaction with imperfections. Here, we show that the size of the smallest localized mode that is formed at the band edge of a one-dimensional periodic medium i...
